March Patreon: The Tragic Case of Blanche Monnier

Blanche Monnier, a 27-year-old socialite from Poitiers, disappeared in 1876. Her family informed people she was traveling internationally, but her mother and brother had locked her in a tiny, dark attic because she wanted to marry a lawyer they disapproved of. For 25 years she lived isolated, without sunlight, fresh air, or proper care. In 1901 an anonymous tip brought police, who found her emaciated, filthy, and still confined. The case shocked France as a hidden, extreme case of familial abuse.
