Cari Farver was a 37-year-old mother and computer programmer from Macedonia, Iowa. In October 2012, she met a man named Dave Kroupa in Omaha, Nebraska, and they started casually dating. Just two weeks later, on November 13, 2012, Cari disappeared after spending the night at Dave’s apartment. Although her phone continued to send messages saying she had moved and wanted to be left alone, her family and friends grew suspicious.

Over the next few years, Dave, Cari’s family, and another woman named Shanna “Liz” Golyar received thousands of strange and threatening messages claiming to be from Cari. But it wasn’t really her—Liz, who had briefly dated Dave before Cari, was responsible for Cari’s disappearance and had been impersonating her for 3 years.
